The Warsaw Rising Museum – Insurgents during World War II

The Warsaw Rising Museum was opened on the 60th anniversary of the outbreak of fighting in Warsaw. This museum is a tribute to those who were fighting and died for their country. For those who lost their lifes for independent Poland.

The Rising Museum is one of the members of the Platform of European Memory and Conscience.

It is also organizing annual events related to the anniversary of the Uprising. Moreover, a lot of concerts as well as lectures and workshops takes place there.

It is a must have to visit if you are in Warsaw. People say that this is one of the best museums in Poland. For this reason it is very popular and usualy it is hard to find tickets. Most of the times they are sold out even 2 weeks before day of the visit.

The Collection

Total area of the warsaw rising museum takes more than 3000 m2. Collection consinsts of 800 exhibition items, about 1500 photographs as well as films and sound recordings. You will also be able to visit cinema to see short 3D movie. Movie will show you how ruins of Warsaw in 1945 looked like from the air.

There are three floors of the permanent exhibition. Visitors of the tour are going through stages of the Uprising. They are walking until the moment that the insurgents abandon Warsaw. You will see a lot of artifacts from weapons to the love letters.

The second part of the exhibition is in Hall B. This is a home to a full scale reproduction of an American B-24J bomber. Large part of the display is dedicated to Germany and its allies. In Hall B you also can watch recordings of witness accounts of the Uprising. 

Building of the museum also includes observation tower. You are able to admire a panorama view of the Warsaw city. Moreover, there is a basement in the building. It includes the replica of the sewers used by insurgents.

There is also the Freedom Park. It is located next to the museum. You can find there the Memorial Wall. It is covered with nearly 11,000 names of soldiers that were killed during the Uprising. 

The History

The Warsaw Uprising erupted on August 1, 1944. That was the fifth year of German occupation. Uprising ended after 63 days of heroic battle.

The institution of the museum was established in 1983. However, construction works took place for many years. Finally, Rising Museum opened officially on July 31, 2004. This date was marking the 60th anniversary of Warsaw Uprising.

Sponsors of the museum did good research of history of the Uprising as well as belongings of the Polish Underground State. They collected and also maintained hundreads of important artifacts. They not only created an archive of historical informations about Uprising but also recorded stories and memories of living participants.

  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 8.00 a.m. – 6.00 p.m.
  • Tuesday: CLOSED
  • Thursday: 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, Sunday: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

In the summer school holidays: 

  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday: CLOSED
  • Thursday: 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

The last admission is always 30 minutes before closing hour.

  • discount ticket – 20 PLN
  • groups – 15 PLN per person (only for group with the guide and online reservation)

Moreover, the admission ticket includes 3D film.

Admission on Sundays is FREE.
